Annatto

Annatto is a type of food coloring made from the seeds of the Achiote tree. In addition to its culinary uses, annatto has long been used in many parts of South and Central America for art, as a cosmetic, and to treat various medical conditions. Annatto contains numerous plant-based compound with antioxidant properties, including carotenoids, terpenoids, flavonoids, and tocotrienols

It’s a natural colorant, derived from the achiote tree, and used commonly in cheddar cheese, butter, margarine, custard, etc. Soap makers sometimes use it by soaking whole annatto seeds in oil. This colors the oil which is then used to make the soap.

Is annatto good for skin?

It is particularly high in antioxidants that benefit skin health, which is one of the reasons it is often added to cosmetic products. Annatto powder paste applied to the skin helps fight wrinkles, sun damage and other signs of aging, while consuming the seeds provides similar benefits from the inside out.

Soaps cannot be made without Sodium Hydroxide (Lye)

Soap, by definition, is fat or oil mixed with an alkali. The oil comes from an animal or plant, while the alkali is a chemical called lye. In bar soap-making, the lye is sodium hydroxide.
